How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Clothes

Spilled a glass of red? Here's the step-by-step rescue plan our cleaners use — works on cotton, silk and carpets too.

Red wine is one of the most-feared stains for a reason — the tannins bind to fibres in minutes. The good news: act fast and the rescue is almost always possible, even on white shirts. Here's what we tell customers when they call us in a panic.

Act within 60 seconds

The single biggest factor is speed. A wet wine stain lifts; a dried one fights back. If you're at a dinner table, blot — never rub — with a clean napkin, then move the garment somewhere you can treat it properly.

The home rescue (cotton, linen, polyester)

  1. Blot excess wine with a clean white cloth — no rubbing.
  2. Stretch the stained area over a bowl and pour cool water through from the back of the fabric (forces the stain out, not deeper in).
  3. Apply a paste of one part dish soap to three parts hydrogen peroxide. Leave 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cold water. If a shadow remains, repeat once.
  5. Wash on the hottest cycle the care label allows.

Silk, wool and 'dry clean only' items

Stop. Don't apply peroxide or hot water — they'll set the stain permanently and may damage delicate dyes. Tell them what spilled and how long ago; the more information, the better the result.

Most red wine stains on suits, dresses and silk shirts come out cleanly if treated within 24 hours — beyond 72 hours, removal rate drops sharply.

Carpet and upholstery

Same principle — blot, don't rub. Sprinkle salt or baking soda generously to absorb liquid, vacuum after 10 minutes, then dab with a cloth dipped in cold water and a drop of dish soap. Skip the 'white wine cancels red wine' myth; it just dilutes the problem.

When to call us

If the stain is older than 24 hours, on a delicate fabric, or you've already tried and failed, book a collection and we'll handle it. Our specialist team treats wine stains weekly — there's a high chance we've seen worse.
