Laundry for Council Housing and Temporary Accommodation

How councils and housing providers can arrange specialist laundry for temporary accommodation, hostels and council housing during bed bug or flea incidents.

Councils, housing associations and temporary-accommodation providers regularly have to help residents with bed bug or flea problems, often while the household is moving between rooms or properties. This guide explains how a specialist laundry arrangement can fit into that work: referrals, resident communication, pest control coordination and what to include in a contract brief.

In brief: agree a referral route, a named contact per site and sealed handover arrangements; coordinate with pest control; and give the laundry provider postcodes, likely volumes and item types. MyLaundress holds seven London council contracts for specialist laundry services.

Where laundry fits in a housing response

Laundry handles suitable clothing, bedding and soft textiles. Pest treatment of the room or property, furniture decisions and moving the household are separate parts of your process. Plan laundry so clean items do not return to an untreated room.

A referral route that works

  1. The housing officer or accommodation manager confirms the incident and the pest control plan.
  2. The resident is told what will be collected, why, and roughly when it will return.
  3. Items are bagged and sealed in the room using bags agreed with the laundry service.
  4. A named site contact hands over sealed bags and records the count.
  5. Returned items are delivered to a treated room or the household's new accommodation, as agreed.

Respecting residents

Many residents in temporary accommodation have few clothes. Make sure they have essentials while items are away, avoid personal details on bag labels, and explain the process in plain language.

Our council and housing experience

MyLaundress holds seven London council contracts for specialist laundry services. That is a statement about the contracts we hold, not a council endorsement, and it does not mean every contract covers every specialist service. We do not publish council names or contract details without permission.

What to include in a contract brief

  • Sites and full postcodes, including any outside London.
  • Typical incident frequency and volume.
  • Service types needed: bed bug, flea-affected or incontinence laundry.
  • Referral, approval and invoicing contacts.
  • Collection access and timing constraints.

Specialist laundry is available in London and across the rest of the United Kingdom, subject to postcode, textile suitability and agreed collection arrangements. Ordinary laundry and everyday dry cleaning remain London services, and London urgent-collection wording is not a national response promise.

Common questions

Can you serve our out-of-London placements?

Often, yes. Specialist laundry covers the UK where courier collection is available for the postcode, confirmed at booking.
