If your dog or cat shares the sofa or the bed, hair and smell in your bedding come with the territory. A lot of it can be handled at home. Sometimes, though, a home machine just isn't the right tool. Here's how to tell the difference.
Getting hair off before washing
- Shake bedding outdoors, or use a lint roller or rubber glove on the surface.
- A short tumble on a cool, no-heat setting before washing loosens hair, if the label allows tumble drying.
- Clean your machine's filter and drum seal afterwards — hair builds up there.
- Don't overload the drum; bedding needs room to move for hair to rinse away.
Dealing with smells at home
Wash at the highest temperature the care label allows, with a normal dose of a good detergent, and make sure bedding dries completely, as damp fabric holds odour. Follow product instructions for any laundry additive and check it's suitable for the fabric. Avoid mixing cleaning products: some combinations are unsafe and can damage fibres.
Signs it's time for a specialist service
- Smells come back soon after washing, or a load has been sitting damp.
- Large items like duvets, throws or big pet blankets won't fit or wash properly at home.
- Your machine is clogging with hair or you'd rather keep pet items out of it.
- You need a big batch done at once, such as after a stay or a move.
What a specialist pet laundry does differently
We process pet items in our separate specialist facility, so they don't share a wash with other customers' laundry. Where the fabric allows, items are washed at 60°C with specialist detergents and an oxygen-releasing additive that helps lift organic odour, then inspected and dried at settings adjusted to the fabric.
We're honest about limits: very old or deeply set odours may reduce rather than disappear completely, and no wash makes bedding allergen-free.
What to send
Washable pet bedding and covers, pet blankets and throws, cushion covers, pet towels and sofa throws are all accepted. We don't accept collars, harnesses, toys or non-washable foam inserts. Pricing is by weight under our specialist tariff, with collection and delivery free — see the service page for current rates.
